Pomimo oswojenia z ludzką głupotą, trwająca właśnie wystawa Goshki Macugi była w stanie mnie zaskoczyć. Liczne ręcznie zdobione pocztówki adresowane do Andy Rottenberg są raczej hardkorowe.

Cóż, na ścianie niechlubnych zachętowych skandali znalazłem nawet dokumenty z "Siusiu". Warto zobaczyć, poczytać, dzieciom pokazać.

DIK Fagazine is happy to invite you for the New York premiere of our newest "BEFORE ’89" issue at Printed Matter. Join us for a launch event Saturday, December 10th, 5-7PM, with editor Karol Radziszewski discussing topics addressed in the issue with Boshko Boskovic, Program Director of Residency Unlimited. The talk will start at 6PM.

The newest issue of DIK Fagazine, "BEFORE ’89," is the culmination of extensive archive work, as well as travels across Europe. Drawing from a range of contributors, the magazine traces a cultural legacy specific to Poland, while following a trail through Romania, Estonia, Latvia, Serbia, Hungary and the Czech Republic.

Wolfgang Tillmans, who first visited Warsaw in 2011, provides an account of the anniversary of the plane crash in Smolensk, celebrated in the overblown national-religious vein of the Polish right. Bruce LaBruce’s contribution gives the impression that he's describing a time when communism is alive and well, and not Poland in the year 2000.

The publication explores park cruising areas, train stations, beaches and other casual hook-up spots. Ryszard Kisiel shares the astonishing story of his zine titled "Filo", Slava Mogutin uncovers the story of homosexuals in the Soviet Gulags, and "BEFORE ‘89" conducts a search investigation for Michel Foucault’s Polish lover.

Karol Radziszewski defines himself as a conceptual artist. His non media specific practice is shaped by the manipulation of the viewer to succumb to varying aesthetic constructs devised by the artist to play with the notion of “what constitutes art.”
One such construct is Radziszewski’s use and representation of the male body. Ready 2 Die (2009) and Backstage (2011) are manifestations of his captive attention to the concept of masculinity in contemporary culture. In both videos Radziszewski makes fantasies come true as he objectifies and sensually peeps through the camera lens. The artist captures his models/actors tenderly on camera as he directs them whilst never being intimate with his subjects.
Ready 2 Die is a black and white record of a video performance undertaken in the Muzeum Sztuki in Lodz (Poland). Its structure recalls the conventions of conceptual art, performance and body art of the 70s. Radziszewski frames what the viewer can see by imposing his point of view and playing with multiple cameras. Questioning the concept of performance art, the artist sums this work as an ambiguous action of conscious voyeurism and “dressing” a naked male body in art.
Filmed inside an art gallery, Backstage is a collaboration between Radziszewski and a group of young men who responded to an ad soliciting their participation. During each casting session, Radziszewski questions his subjects on the topics of shame, exhibitionism and voyeurism. This work not only provides a reexamination of the art historical difference between appearing naked and posing nude but also examines how people rationalize being without clothes in an art venue versus a public space. To break down mental barriers and overcome embarrassment, Radziszewski asks his models to gradually take off their clothes over the course of the session, and to his surprise many are ready to engage willingly for the sake of art.

CoCA in Torun invites you to an amazing exhibition, presenting over 120 works by Polish artists. Some of the exhibited pieces were created at the beginning of the XX century, and some are definitely contemporary; some of the artists are connected to the high art environment, some represent popculture. We’ll have a unique opportunity to see works by renowned “classics” of Polish art scene, such as Ksawery Dunikowski, Roman Opałka, Zbigniew Libera or Józef Robakowski, pieces by artists with background in critical art movement ( like Grzegorz Klaman, Dorota Nieznalska, Alicja Żebrowska, Katarzyna Górna), the representatives of young generation (e.g. Karol Radziszewski, Aleksandra Ska, Hubert Czerepok), but also some artists rarely presenting in the context of contemporary art institutions, such as Roman Polański, Tomasz Stańko or the deathmetal band – Behemoth. All the works have one thing in common: they are manifestations of anger, understood in the context of thymós – Greek term relating to classical tradition, defining vital power, spiritual impulse that gives birth to inspiration. Will they also arouse the anger of the audience?

The architecture of the exhibition space constitutes an essential part of the project: the works are presented in CoCA’s biggest exhibition hall, popularly named as “the church” for its monumental cubature. The architectural design of the show relates to one of the 1943 drawings by Stanisław Szukalski, in which we can see two swastika figures growing out of a shape of the cross.

Here are some pics from the preparations for my "Heal The World" exhibition at the Muzeum Sztuki in Łódź (in a frame of the WIKIzeum project).

History behind the event has its roots in August 1981, in the “carnival of Solidarity”, when Joseph Beuys arrived at Muzeum Sztuki in Łódź. He donates a wooden crate containing a collection of almost 300 works covering 30 years of creative activities. The visit, unpacking the collection and commenting on it is given a status of an artistic action Polentransport 1981 by Beuys himself.

BEFORE '89 issue

We started working on this stunning new issue in 2008 and we were planning to wrap everything up by 2009. Yes, this DIK was supposed to appear exactly in time for the twentieth anniversary of the fall of communism. We wanted it to be festive and pompous. Champagne and caviar were to be served. Now it’s 2011, which is nice too, isn’t it? We put a lot of hard work into researching materials and finding interesting people to talk to. Not everyone wanted to disclose their secrets about the sins of their youth, and also not everyone had something interesting to share in the first place. For you we dug through the archives and travelled across Europe searching for truth.

This issue of DIK begins with some reflections about Poland from the point of view of foreigners, who, let’s make this clear from the beginning, are mostly very critical. When I first read Bruce LaBruce’s text I had the impression that he must be describing the communist times and not, as it actually was the case, Poland in the year 2000, in the beginning of the new millennium. Wolfgang Tillmans first visited Warsaw in 2011 and, although he only stayed for a couple of days, he happened to witness the anniversary of the plane crash in Smoleńsk, celebrated in the overblown national-religious vein of the Polish right. Maybe that’s how it has to be.

However, this issue concentrates mainly on the past and the search for our roots. A successful one at that – we find them in Poland, Romania, Estonia, Latvia, Serbia, Hungary and the Czech Republic. We follow the trail left in the park cruising areas, sneak into public toilets at the train station and peep at buck-naked guys on beaches. Sometimes we’re envious of their adventures, casual attitude and the wild sex with strangers. We also meet Ryszard Kisiel and learn the astonishing story of his zine titled “Filo”, parts of which we reprint here. Slava Mogutin, a Russian writer and artist in exile, who was recently granted an American citizenship, uncovers the story of homosexuals in the Soviet Gulags. Finally we also conduct a search investigation for Michel Foucault’s Polish lover.

This issue also brings you the unsettling texts and drawings by Wojtek Bąkowski, as well as a wordless comic strip (as you will see these images really do not require any words) by Andrej Dubravsky, a young Slovakian bunny-artist.

SPBN is a book about love/sex/desire/lust/intimacy created with the help of Self Publish, Be Happy’s extended network of contributors. In the spirit of SP,BH’s collective ethos, a call for submissions for “naughty” pictures was launched in March 2011. More than 5,000 photographs from around the world were submitted, by both established artists and young up-and-coming practitioners.

SPBN showcases 122 of these photographs by 75 different artists. The photographs, presented in a continuous flux, offer a powerful and uncompromising exploration of contemporary approaches to the themes of sex, desires and taboos within photography. From the surreal to the mundane, from the allusive to the graphic, the images challenge the tradition of erotic photobooks and their very ghettoised approach to desires.

Pare impresji z ostatniego weekendu – wymiana darów artystów z publicznością z okazji otwarcia Muzeum Współczesnego we Wrocławiu. Było trochę dziwnie, trochę chaotycznie, trochę zabawnie. Swoją bluzę z kolekcji MARIOS DIK zamieniłem z dwoma panami na prześcieradło poplamione sokiem szamanki Kim Keum Hwa Mudang w komplecie z czerwoną reklamówką skradzioną z głowy performera, który miał w niej dokonywać egzekucji (nie jestem pewien czy dobrze to wszystko zrozumiałem).

What do the the artists want to share with the audience?

What can the audience give the artists?

Gift exchange is an opportunity to share your own work with a selected person. The artists will bring their gifts for the audience, and the members of the audience will present the artists with theirs. In the course of the evening, the exchanged objects will form a 'live' exhibition, which shape will depend on both the artists and the public.

The gifts can be either big or small, funny or nostalgic, they may include peculiarities of all sorts, made or found, surprising in some different way. These may be objects created specially for this occasion or gems plucked from a scrap heap. What counts is the idea and imagination of the participants. A history of an object and a story about its sentimental significance can have an important impact on its value.

Gifts from the audience, chosen by the artists, will be on display throughout a month at the Wroclaw Contemporary Museum, while the artists' gifts will go directly into the hands of their recipients.

Design for Freedom — Freedom in Design Exhibition. Graphic Design in Poland 1981 – 2011 is a presentation of the design of the last 30 years, during the system transformation in Poland covering the period from socialism to post capitalism.

The project shows design as forms of organizing the national sub-consciousness into political, economic or artistic visual presentation. Graphic arts present the symbolic meanings and the hidden social emotions using the language of pictures, signs and various aesthetics. It becomes the unaware or targeted expression of political struggle, economic constraints or one among very few ways of escaping and creative expression. The role of a Polish graphic designer and citizen during the historical changes seems to be ambiguous. It is characterized by paradox: anarchy and conformity, individualism and yielding to trends, rigorism and autonomy, rationalism and romanticism. In a reaction to the dynamic changes and unstable standards of the various political and economic systems in the last 30 years in Poland, the designers developed an entire spectrum of creative attitudes and adequate styles.

The exhibition will show rarely presented posters, newspapers, books, packaging, signs and graphic arts produced between 1981 — 2011. It is going to be the first time the output of Polish design from the period of a 30-year-long transformation is presented in the context of struggle and conflict of political and social awareness. The selected works are the most representative and significant for those occurrences. When presented as a cycle they become a story about a drastic change of life models, priorities, ambitions, codes and ways of approaching that reality, that affected Polish people as well as changing visual culture.

The exhibition will be presented as an open working space hosting activities and events connected with practical and theoretical aspects of the Polish graphic design.

Gay couples can marry, adopt children and gay characters are no longer absent from TV programmes and respectable suburban neighbourhoods. The Polish Poster Exhibition is a periodic, nation-wide display organised every two years by the Poster Museum in Wilanow. The Exhibition concentrates the most celebrated poster artists based in Poland.

Nearly 100 artists, over 500 works can be seen in The Poster Museum’s both galleries in Wilanow. The display accounts for the greatest applied graphics review in the country, because the posters mirror not only the latest trends in the graphic design, but also – inevitably – the whole cultural life of our country from the last two years.
Actually, not only this determines the uniqueness of our exhibition. Spontaneity and vigorousness of The Polish Poster Exhibition – these are the key issues for us, the artists and the organisers. Diversity, opulence of colours, spectacularity, freshness – these expressions reflect the exhibition’s character the best… The display immediately captures all what is happening in the Polish art and culture. That is why some people even mention guerrilla art – artistic guerrilla movement in the context of The Polish Poster Exhibition.

Despite the obvious advancements in the process of secularization and negotiation of identity in the Romanian society, sexual morality remains under the heavy domination of religion, of exaggerated discourse, and of facile mythologies. Even though the degree of tolerance towards sexual minorities has increased recently, understanding, respect, and real political acceptance of such minorities are far from being widespread.

In a rather hostile context, Desire is WAR is a statement-exhibition and form of cultural activism that aims to provoke a debate around a certain kind of desire that quite often ignites intense bitter conflicts, even “wars” within families, groups of friends, neighbors, at school, at work or at home: the yearning for same sex persons.

By presenting a selection of recent works completed in various media - video, drawing, text, sound - from Apparatus 22, Muhammad Ali, Stefan Botez, Katja-Lee Eliad, Farid Fairuz, Mikhail Karikis, Matts Leiderstram, Matmos, MEN, Ioana Nemes, Gyarfas Olah, Karol Radziszewski, Emily Roydson, Ryan Trecartin, artists and musicians that consistently approached and examined queer topics, among others, Desire is WAR is opening up a space for discovery and dialogue that is much needed in Romania and not only. The exhibition attempts to go beyond the perception of queer culture as mere liberalization of emotions or threat to the social and political establishment.

The works in the exhibition discourse on a wide array of issues related to desire for same-sex persons: desire as source of inspiration, the struggle for rights to public representation and expression for the LGBT community and analysis of public rhetoric around civil rights, re-contextualisation of heterosexual icons in queer perspective, "spectacular" aura of queerness and associated mythologies, dilemmas and confusion caused by the self-acceptance of asexual orientations that are so often socially blamed, nostalgia, the narrative possibilities presented by juxtaposition of „normal” life with the „other”, virtue and sin, compromise and guilt, the power of seduction, queerness as means of aesthetic expression etc.

Music will be particularly emphasized within the show as we are interested in its potential to act as a tool of mass communication of both radical ideas and genuine emotions on queer desire.

This approach stemmed from the historical connection between queer community, visual arts, and music. Numerous musicians have been using pop, dance or rock music together with cultural and historical references in order to wave political critique; in a different spectrum, real personal stories inspired by the desire for same sex individuals have been inserted into a milieu that was resistant to it, thus succeeding to get across a message that otherwise would have had less impact.

The exhibition display, made in collaboration with architect Laura Paraschiv, is deconstructing a widespread cliché according to which urban queer culture is all about parties, promiscuity and glamorous lifestyle. The works will feature in a chaotic post-party set that decomposes the shiny surface and makes room for the real problems of queer community, for its dilemmas and possible solutions of transforming gaps between heterosexual and queer norms into forms of expressions and ways of understanding cultural and sexual difference. Throughout the exhibition room there will be various materials on queer topics: magazines, publication, music mix tapes etc.

"Transilvania" is a series of images that were created in the summer of 2007 in the town of Ocna Sibiului, whose main attraction are salt lakes and mud treatments. The photographs were taken secretly. They do not make a narrative – they make a cycle, although in truth every one is a separate "image". Their composition, despite a fairly random photographing process, often looks prepared. Young boys, mature men, and sometimes old men, almost naked, unaware of the “voyeur”, naturally “pose” in front of the lens. Although they are captured in motion, their poses seem very theatrical, sometimes almost pathetic. The seemingly holiday climate, however, has a somewhat nostalgic character and a slightly palpable tension. One can easily imagine that this is a strange record of a performance in an unconventional setting, and only the “actors” are not aware that they are “performing”. Neither do they know the director.

BOOKS UNFOLDED is a series of collaborative installations based on Vassiliea Stylianidou’s artist’s book “The Plotless Room_I Lie to History”. The book has been published in 2011 by Revolver Publishing, Berlin, in collaboration with futura, Athens. “The Plotless Room_I Lie to History” deals with the limitations of systems of order such as language, family, architecture and gender as well as the relationship between text and viewer/reader, text and space.

BOOKS UNFOLDED VOL.1 intents to continue the circulation of concepts that surround the artist’s book. Vassiliea Stylianidou gave the book to 37 artists. She asked them to create an object/sculpture out of the book’s discursive, material and aesthetic concepts in order to find a relation between their work and the book. The 37 objects/sculptures will be presented on a construction especially conceived for BOOKS UNFOLDED VOL.1.

FORZA NUOVA is a paradoxical and brainstorming event, between political and allusive blunt statements. For the preview evening, Space4828 is delighted to present “The Mock Modernist Manifesto”, performance by Vanessa Mitter, from 6.30 p.m.
Alongside Giovanni Morbin’s work “Il Popolo d’Italia” (2007), where the artist displays the volume hidden between the bodies and the arms of a group of young fascists, the work of Karol Radziszewski “Fag Fighters: Prologue” (2007) shows the artists's grandmother preparing the pink masks for a punitive actions of "fags" against the conservative society. "Fag Fighters: Prologue" is part of a larger work titled Fag Fighters, a provocative work of a fictional urban "guerrilla" unit, where the artist showcases the action of a gay-gang operating at the margins of mainstream society, committing several acts of violence, including sexual abuses.
If in this artwork the border between drama and simulation is blurred and the fictional aspect appears disturbingly realistic, in Vanessa Mitter’s performance “The Mock Modernist Manifesto” the artist strikes-up a hymn of praise to the realm of fictional life-style against the truthfulness of Nicola Ruben Montini’s video footage of his performance “We hope not to have another B-day”, where the reference to Berlusconian Italian times are dramatically related to Mussolini’s dictatorship.
The shows continues with a series of images by London based italian artist Giusy Pirrotta, whose work in the show is a subjective interpretation of an english tourist's memories on the post war italian panorama through a structuralist intervention on the image format source. Thus found medium slides of travel around the world which depict also a some touristic sights of Italy, superimposed and combined in a light box. The refined approach of Giusy Pirrotta is here amplified by the work of Olympia Polymeni, whose delicate drawing goes back to the theme of gender, in a naif and enormously poetic approach to the representation of the body.

Projekt Dramaturg/ Kurator/Storyteller dotyczy zbadania strategii kuratorskich w obrębie budowania struktury spektaklu przez dramaturga oraz strategii dramaturgicznych w tworzeniu wystawy przez kuratora. Interesuje nas sprawdzenie pojęcie storytellingu w sztukach performatywnych.
Niezwykle inspirująca jest interpretacja opowieści napisana przez Waltera Benjamina. Dla Benjamina storyteller to ten, który „ (...) bierze to, o czym opowiada z doświadczenia; z doświadczenia swojego lub cudzego. I czyni je ponownie doświadczeniem tych, którzy słuchają jego historii.” Tak właśnie powstaje prawdziwa opowieść, która zdaniem Benjamina nierozerwalnie złączona jest z doświadczeniem. Jak pisał Martin Jay w eseju poświęconym Benjaminowi: „Doświadczenie jest więc narracyjne, ale nie w sensie wyłuskania go z subiektywnej otoczki wyobraźni autora, nadania mu formy hipotaktycznej fabuły (...) To raczej doświadczenie zbieracza, zestawiającego elementy przeszłości, łączącego to, co rozproszone w nowe konstelacje”. Podobnie, tylko od strony wizualnej, badał to Siegfried Kracauer, nazywając wręcz somatyczną reakcję widza podczas oglądania filmu w kinie „efektem rezonansu”. W naszym polu zainteresowania jest więc takie doświadczanie narracji, które pojawia się jako inna możliwość budowania struktur teatralnych czy wizualnych poprzez kolaż czy patchwork. Narracji, która w pewien sposób „ przepracowała” formy narracji klasycznej, linearnej.

Self-publishing is still very difficult to define. During the panel discussion, together with the invited guests we will consider the role of self-publishing, or as some prefer DIY publishing or independent publishing. We will particularly be focusing on photobooks, which are photographic books published at the artists’ own expense. There are many doubts and questions about the form, though self-publishing is becoming an ever trendier medium of expression for artists of many provenances.

The panel will be moderated by Maryna Tomaszewska, artist, curator, editor-in-chief of "TO! Periodyk Najgorszy". The history of self-publishing in Poland and around the world, its current state and future will be discussed by the editor-in-chief of "Wydawnictwo 40000 malarzy", Kuba Banasiak, artist and editor of DIK Fagazine, Karol Radziszewski, Michal Woliński, editor of the irregularly published "Piktogram", and Paweł Jarodzki, artist and creator of Poland’s most famous artzine – Luxus.

Interdisciplinary Conference - The Archive as Project

On May 13-14th, 2011 the Archeology of Photography Foundation in Warsaw, Poland, organises an interdisciplinary conference dedicated to the practice and theory/critique of the photographic archive. The conference is in the frame of "PhotoRegister" project. In the wake of the “archival turn” that took place in the last 15 years or so, there seems to be an urgent need to reflect on the role of the photographic archive in Central and Eastern Europe, not only for the humanities, but also in the context of art and politics – on the perspectives it opens and the dangers it creates.

The debates will concentrate on such issues, as "The totality/fragmentariness of the archive", "Memory, history and the question of technology", "The Institutional Perspective – questions of acquisition, research, and publicity", and two main topics: "The poetics/politics of the archive" and "The archive holy/unholy — the archive secret/public", whose aim is to raise key questions concerning the archive as metaphor and political practice, as well as the issue of the accessibility of archives in the age of digitalization.

The title of the conference – The Archive as Project – points towards the necessity to seriously consider the question, if it is possible to identify and neutralize the automatisms (and bad faith) at work in archival practice? The aim of such a critical gesture being not to strive for the archive's even more perfect transparency, but towards a conscious, explicit concept of its construction and politics, an understanding of the archive as project: a certain potentiality and a challenge for the future.

The compilation of video presented in ursula blikle lounge is a selection of works from the Zachęta video collection. The programme of the thematic screenings of videos is a spectrum, in other words a certain organized selection of phenomena and concepts analysed by the films’ authors. It is a presentation of works of the newest video art in Poland, created by outstanding artists of the young and middle generation. The screenings that comprise the project Spectrum have been divided into the following thematic blocks: sound, gender, social portrait and roles. The selection made was dictated in part by the technical conditions of the place of presentation – the videos selected were one channel projections, whose theme and aesthetics made them appropriate to be shown in the proposed form. The choice of these works was also an attempt to underline the range of themes that Polish video artists engage with. It shows both a cross-section and the spectrum of problems relevant today in Polish art. This should not be treated as a full picture, but rather as an overview of Polish video art of the last two decades.

Sound, music and silence – we hear them around ourselves, our daily lives are played out in an audio-sphere determined by the environment in which we live and evolve, and also by our own physiological make-up. Only its disturbance or a change causes attention to be paid to the specificity of this sphere. Althamer creates an untypical audio background in the labyrinths of the Moscow metro by inviting a choir of professional singers to perform in a joint action. It is with the help of music that the characters of Katarzyna Kozyra’s fairy-tale Summertale communicate with one another and it is equally music which finally frees the unusual location of the film’s action as well as its heroes from the spell cast over them. In contrast, Anna Niesterowicz’s HH surprises the viewer with its total silence – by depriving the film of a soundtrack the attention of the viewer is concentrated on the gestures of the dancing girls. Karol Radziszewski, in the work Praise the Flowery Meadows, creates a duet: he records his singing, editing it in with songs sung by his grandmother. Artur Żmijewski, working with a deaf-and-dumb choir records very different sounds.

Fag Fighters in Oberhausen

Fag Fighters: Prologue, Karol Radziszewski, 2007, 14'

Fag Fighters are a fictional urban guerrilla unit, a gay-gang operating at the margins of mainstream society, marking their territory with graffiti signatures and committing acts of violence, including sexual violence. The Fag Fighters’ identification mark are their pink balaclavas. From the video 'Fag Fighters: Prologue' we learn that the balaclavas have been made by Karol Radziszewski’s grandmother. Poland’s right wing perceives the gay community as a deadly threat for social order. Radziszewski intercepts and amplifies the stereotype-based conservative discourse and transforms it into an asocial, anarchic, subversive fantasy. He also fabricates evidence of the unit’s activity – graffiti, footprints, amateur pictures taken by the gang members. The border between drama and simulation is blurred; fiction appears disturbingly realistic.

The video 'Fag Fighters: Prologue' can be seen as a bridge spanning the two realities that Radziszewski introduces into the field of his art: the family and the gay subculture. Both of these social spaces belong to the realm of the artist’s private life and yet they seem to be worlds apart; they are two opposite poles of Radziszewski’s identity. And yet the extremities unexpectedly meet in 'Fag Fighters: Prologue'.

The latest DVD from Austrian INDEX includes my "Fag Fighters: Prologue" video.

The title of the compilation JUST SAY NO TO FAMILY VALUES is borrowed from the eponymous video, and is in line with the work as statement and clear commentary on the current increasingly recognizable conservative backlash. In their short video, filmmakers John Giorno and Antonello Faretta unabashedly celebrate hedonism with an emphatic gentleness and poke fun at conservative positions in a lyrical speech act. The aim of the compilation is to cast a multi-part glance from various perspectives and geo-political contexts on body and gender roles as well as sexual politics. (Dietmar Schwärzler)
