Promotion of so called ‘young art’ is an investment in the future. That is why this phenomenon must be located within sight of the patronage and its institutions which realize the cultural policy of a country. At present, it must be stressed, there are between ten and twenty events of all-Poland character whose subject is a presentation of the young generation of artists. These are both reviews and contests, participation in which elevates the status of the participants. Among them The Young Triennial, organized by the Centre of Polish Sculpture (CRP) since 1992, stands out for the openness of the formula and the scale of the enterprise.
The ideological tenets have always highlighted the manifestation of the young generation of visual artists who are selected by their competent peers (artists and critics) in the form of a competition. The Triennial comprehensively presents the creative potential of young generation and the artistic strategies preferred by the artists. It constitutes an attempt at recognizing the newly arising tendencies and trends.
The exhibition aims at diagnosing the current state of art realized by young artists who are given a chance of a spectacular artistic debut.
The Triennial tradition – the fifth edition can be treated as a humble jubilee – refers to the meetings of young artists and art critics initiated at the beginning of the 90s by Prof. Jan Berdyszak, then the Chairman of the Programme Council of CRP. The meetings resulted in the consecutive exhibitions:Places, Non-Places (1992), Status Quo (1996), A Model to Assemble (2000), no titleTM (2004), and as kind of synthesis; The Art of the 3rd Republic, re-presentation of artistic facts Young Triennial (2003), under the auspices of the Minister of Culture.
So far our exhibitions have presented over a hundred young artists. For many of them it was not only a debut but also a beginning of a real career. It is the assessment of artists’ production that decides on the participation, thus it is difficult to predict which disciplines will dominate this exhibition. It is not a show of homogeneous character but a collection of diverse means of artistic expression, often crossing the borders between traditional disciplines. A significant value of our presentation is the possibility of creating new works. The Centre offers its technical assistance. The place itself, because of its nature, makes an additional inspiration for the projects which may come to special life in its space.
This broad openness and a lack of strict rules cause that the Triennial keeps its major place on the artistic scene. There are thirty three artists (including groups) that have been qualified for the current edition and they originate from various cities. They represent all artistic disciplines and actions of performance type.
